Sub-junior/Small Sided Football

Sub-junior soccer consists of mixed teams of boys and girls ranging in age from U7's up to and including U10's. Games are played on a Saturday morning at Holloway Road, Sandringham (Mel. 77 B11).

FFV under the direction and leadership of Football Federation Australia has introduced a new playing format for younger players called "Small-Sided Football". This is a modified version of the game designed to aid the skills development of younger players. The games are played on a smaller playing field and with a smaller number of players per "team". There is no positional play so players are expected to be both attackers and defenders and goal scorers. The smaller sized fields with fewer numbers of players per team encourages more touches on the ball and opportunities for more goals to be scored.

The Small Sided Football concept was introduced nationwide for U7 and U8 players in 2008. In 2009, U9 and U10 players will be introduced to the new format.

Small Sided Football games for U7's through U10's are on Saturday mornings on a home and away basis in a club versus club format. U7 and U8 games consist of two 20 minute halves with five players per side, no goalie and with parents serving as "game leaders". Small Sided Football for U9 and U10 players consists of two 25 minute halves with 7 per side, a goalkeeper, and "an instructing referee". These games are generally refereed by parents but our club provides referees that have been trained under our "budding referee" program (Junior players U11-U14) for many of the home games.

All players will be assigned to a team and an hour long skill training session will be conducted during the week at our training ground at Spring Street.

Girls are welcome to play on any of our sub-junior teams if they wish. However, girls U8 to U10 can also chose to play on an all-girl U10 team. Please visit our Junior Girls page under Our Teams/Programs for more details.

No league ladders or scores are recorded for small sided football games as the emphasis is on having fun and developing fundamental soccer skills within a team environment. Our Directors of Coaching will oversee this program to ensure that our all players are provided with the best possible coaching to allow for maximum skills development.

Sub-Junior/Small Sided Football FAQ's

Question: When will the season start? When and where are the games played? How long does the season last? How long are the games?

  • The duration of the season depends on the number of teams entered in each age group, but generally the season begins in late April/early May and concludes the last weekend in August or the first weekend in September. For this season's start and end dates, please see our season timetable under Info for Members.
  • U9's and U10's play 2 × 25 minute halves in a 7v7 format and U7's and U8's play 2×20 minute halves in a 5v5 format.

Question: What age group should I sign up for?

  • Age groups are calculated by calendar year. What this means is that if a player turns 10 at any time during the calendar year (even after the season ends), he/she plays in an U10 team.

Question: How do I register? How much does it cost?

  • Please visit our Register to Play page for this year's fees and registration information.
  • Generous family and concession card discounts are available.

Question: What do I need to play?

  • All players are required to wear soccer boots and shin pads both to training and during games. Players should also bring water bottles to both training and to games.
  • Sandringham Soccer Club official shorts and socks are worn for all games. These can be purchased from Rebel Sport, Shop 3047B, Level 3, Westfield Shoppingtown, 4 - 10 Jamieson Street, Cheltenham VIC 3192. Team shirts are supplied by the club to all sub-junior players.

Question: How will I be assigned to a team?

  • Team assignments will be made following the club registration deadline. You will be contacted by your coach/or team manager regarding training times. Consideration will be given to friendship groups when making team assignments for U/7 through U/10 age groups. Please indicate on your registration form if you have a friend who you want to play with. Also, teams can be based on players attending the same school if this preference is indicated on the registration form.

Question: When and where does training occur?

  • Generally, each team has a weekly training session of approximately 1 hour's duration. It is up to the coach to determine which day of the week that is best suited to his schedule. If there is a day on which you cannot train, please indicate this on your registration form.
  • Sub-junior training is at Spring St. in Sandringham (Melways Ref: 77 A12) or at Peterson Reserve, Highett Road, Highett (Melways Ref: 77 B8).
